What Is Driver CPC and Why Do You Need It?
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is a legal requirement for all professional HGV, bus, and coach drivers in the UK. Any driver who uses their Category C, C+E, D, or D+E licence professionally must hold a valid Driver CPC. Without it, they cannot legally drive for hire or reward.
Without it, they cannot legally drive for hire or reward.
The Driver CPC has two distinct requirements: an initial qualification for new professional drivers, and ongoing periodic training for experienced drivers. The initial qualification is completed through Driver CPC Module 2 and Module 4 examinations. Periodic training requires 35 hours of approved training every 5 years, recorded on the Driver Qualification Card (DQC).
All Driver CPC training delivered by Submatter or our approved partners is DVSA-approved. Training can take place at our Wigan training centre, at the customer's premises, or online. Every hour completed counts officially towards the 35-hour requirement and is recorded on the national database.
Driver CPC Module 2: Theory
What Module 2 covers:
Module 2 is a theory-based case study examination assessing the driver's knowledge across the core subject areas of the Driver CPC syllabus. Topics include: road traffic law and driving regulations, health and safety obligations, vehicle safety and condition, load securing, emergency procedures, and professional driver conduct. The exam is computer-based and consists of case study questions that test knowledge application rather than simple recall.
Who needs to take Module 2:
Module 2 is required by drivers completing their initial Driver CPC qualification, typically new entrants to professional driving who have recently passed their Category C or D licence test. Drivers who held their licence before September 2009 (grandfathered rights) are exempt from the initial qualification but must still complete periodic training.
Driver CPC Module 4: Practical Demonstration
What Module 4 covers:
Module 4 is a practical demonstration assessment in which the candidate demonstrates their ability to perform vehicle safety checks and shows knowledge of vehicle security and load safety. The test is conducted at a DVSA-approved test centre. The examiner asks the candidate to identify, explain, and in some cases demonstrate safety-related checks on the vehicle. Preparation for Module 4 is included in Submatter's Driver CPC training programme. Candidates receive guided walkthroughs of every check point on the assessment list, practise on representative vehicles, and receive feedback on technique before sitting the test.

Classroom vs Online Driver CPC Training
Driver CPC Periodic Training: 35 Hours Every 5 Years
Professional HGV and bus drivers must complete 35 hours of periodic Driver CPC training every 5 years to maintain their Driver Qualification Card (DQC). The 35 hours is typically completed as five separate 7-hour modules, which can be attended in any order and spread across the 5-year period.
Submatter offers up to 14 Driver CPC modules across our schedule. All 14 modules cover HGV CPC requirements, and the majority also cover PCV CPC. If you need to confirm which modules apply to your category, contact us and we can advise. Approved subject areas include: safe and fuel-efficient driving, driver health and fitness, road safety and hazard awareness, load security, and regulations for dangerous goods (ADR). Hours are submitted to the DVSA by the training provider and automatically recorded on the national database against the driver's DQC.
Training can be delivered at our Wigan training centre, online, or at your premises through Submatter or our approved partner network. All modules are DVSA-approved and count fully towards the 35-hour requirement.
